Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (about 35 minutes drive from Metra) is a good sized town that has a number of interesting architectural features dating back many hundreds of years. It was historically a fortified gateway separating the lower and upper Serchio Valley. A thriving market town that today is the centre of trade for many of the nearby villages. Definitely worth visiting with plenty of shops for souvenirs, leather ware, fashion clothes, delicatessen shops with delicious products most of which are locally produced and of course plenty of cafe and restaurants. Market day is Saturday and starts early.
