Another pleasant place to stop is Castiglioni di Garfagnana, a minor walled town with excellent views in all directions. Parts of the outer town walls have habitable properties built into them, inside are quiet streets and laneways that haven't changed in modern times, they wind past a variety of properties built more than 500 years ago. A very well kept war cemetery dedicated to local fallen heroes is also within the walls. The town has a chequered history with fortifications that date back to Roman times although most of the existing walls were rebuilt in the 14th Century. Much needed restoration work to the town has been ongoing for several years and is nearing completion. Coffee, ice cream, Panini and much more are available from the shop and cafe outside the walls, then sit across the road to enjoy the view again.
